Today’s Doodle honours King’s Day, also known as Koningsdag. Every year on April 27th, Dutch communities gather to honour the Dutch king’s birthday and celebrate their heritage.
This national holiday was previously known as Queensday, but when Queen Beatrix crowned her son Willem-Alexander as king in 2013, the name was changed. To honour the royal House of Orange, festival participants can be seen donning orange clothing and drinking the national drink known as Oranjebitter.
Carnivals on the streets and flea markets—the day is jam-packed with exciting events and activities. Do you have a sweet tooth? Visit a bakery for a fast sugary snack. Do you need to go shopping? Take a stroll around the many open-air free markets that have been set up throughout the streets. Toys, games, and books are even encouraged to be traded in for new ones.
This year, wear brilliant orange to show your Dutch pride and respect on Koningsdag.
Happy King’s Day, Fijne Koningsdag!
