Statehood Day: Google doodle celebrates Serbia National Day

Serbia’s National Day, also known as Statehood Day or Sovereignty Day, is observed today. The two-day holiday celebrates the start of the 1804 rebellion against the Ottoman Empire, which evolved into the Serbian Revolution, which led to the recognition of Serbia as a sovereign state. The first Serbian constitution, the Candlemas Constitution, was enacted on February 15, 1835. It was a progressive accord aimed at protecting human rights.

Statehood Day was originally recognised as a national holiday in 2001, and it is one of Serbia’s most culturally and historically significant days. Many residents think that if the sky are dark on Statehood Day, the final days of winter will be lovely, but if the skies are clear, the rest of the season will be chilly and blustery.

So here’s to blue skies and parties! Srbije, happy dan dravnosti! (Have a wonderful Serbian Statehood Day!)
