Google doodle celebrates the United Arab Emirates National Day

The yearly Doodle for today honours the Spirit of the Union, or United Arab Emirates National Day! The seven emirates that make up the greater union—Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah—are honoured on this public holiday. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was founded on this day in 1971 and gained independence while maintaining the unique characteristics of each of its emirates.

Emiratis celebrate their unity, patriotism, and varied heritages with loved ones on National Day. Parades, fireworks shows, musical performances, and even camel races and auto rallies are common celebration elements. At every celebration, the UAE’s national flag—which is similar to the one in today’s artwork—is hoisted and flown high in the sky in the colours red, green, white, and black. Families also get together for celebrations and feasts that feature delicious meals like khuzi, which is roasted lamb served over hot rice.

Happy National Day, United Arab Emirates!
