Today’s doodle celebrates Colombia’s Independence Day. On this day in 1810, Colombia declared its independence from Spain. Colombia’s freedom began with the Bogotá uprising, which led to the formation of the Popular Junta and the signing of the Revolutionary Law. The flower shop where it all began is now the official Museum of Independence and is well-visited on this holiday.
Colombians gather in the streets to watch the parade march by. Soldiers march in groups, often carrying firearms, musical instruments, and flags. Traditional folk music fills the air, dancers show off their sophisticated footwork, and others play games like the tejo.
When dinnertime comes, friends and families gather to eat ajiaco (a stew of chicken, corn, and potatoes), arepas (fried cornmeal batter), or bandeja paisa (a dish of fried eggs, minced meat, white rice, plantains, beans, and avocado). It wouldn’t be a true festival without a show, so at night, many gather to watch the fireworks that explode into the sky.
