Google doodle celebrates the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day

Today’s annual Doodle celebrates Independence Day, a holiday honoring the Dominican Republic’s journey to freedom. On this day in 1844, a group called La Trinitaria (Trinity) began a movement to fight for the country’s sovereignty.

Under the leadership of Juan Pablo Duarte, a writer and activist widely considered the founding father of the Dominican Republic, La Trinitalia took its chances against the foreign occupiers in Puerto del Conde. Upon reaching the top of the fortress, Duarte hoisted a blue, red, and white flag high into the sky, much like a work of art today.

On Independence Day, people across the country gather with their loved ones and show their patriotic pride. The holiday also takes place during February’s month-long Carnival de la Vega, which adds to the festive spirit. Many wear colorful costumes and eye-catching masks as they enjoy traditional delicacies such as bacalao (dried salted cod) and mangu (mashed plantains).

Happy Independence Day, Dominican Republic!
