Happy Independence Day, Sri Lanka!

Sri Lanka is a teardrop-shaped island nation recognised for its gorgeous natural beauty, biodiversity, and rich cultural heritage. It is known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Today’s Doodle honours Sri Lanka’s Independence Day, which marks the country’s 50th year as a sovereign nation.

Official celebrations usually begin in Colombo’s Independence Square, where national leaders deliver speeches and wave the Sri Lankan flag, which is portrayed in the Doodle artwork. Scholars deliver talks on Sri Lanka’s battle for independence at institutions across the island once the festivities have begun.

Citizens continue to celebrate throughout the day by eating traditional Sri Lankan feasts, which frequently include tropical fruits like the regal mangosteen (called “Queen of Fruits”) and Ceylon tea, a black tea that is one of the country’s most important exports. Folk music, much of it steeped in the country’s Indigenous traditions, is commonly heard filling the air as dance acts accompany the lively soundtrack of Sri Lankan culture.
