Today’s annual doodle celebrates Jordan’s Independence Day, also known as Eid al-Istiklaal. On this day in 1946, Jordan ended its British mandate and officially assumed sovereignty.
Celebrations begin in the capital Amman, with citizens and local leaders taking part in the ceremony. After the initial event, fireworks viewing events will be held in cities across the country.
No matter where people are, Jordan’s national flag is always nearby. The black, white, and green flag depicted in today’s artwork features a white star atop a red triangle. Each color represents a different period of Jordan’s history, and the stars symbolize his seven verses of Surah al-Fatihah in the Quran.
Happy Independence Day, Jordan!
