Wonka wins $39.0 million and the Golden Ticket at the domestic weekend box office

With a $39.0 million win in its premiere, Wonka has secured the golden ticket at the domestic weekend box office.

Wonka is currently sitting at $151.4 million at the global box office, having earned an additional $53.6 million overseas, according to Comscore.

Wonka’s $56.1 million North American opening was not nearly as successful as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s 2005 premiere.

Timothée Chalamet plays the character of Willy Wonka in Wonka, which was originally portrayed by Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971). But in this tale, we discover Wonka’s beginnings and his formative years as a chocolatier.

In the review of Wonka, we described it as “a big old fashioned movie musical that uses Roald Dahl’s world just judiciously enough to avoid any serious hits to the author or Gene Wilder’s legacy.”

In its fifth week of release, Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes came in second place with $5.8 million in domestic receipts. With a global total of $300.5 million, the Hunger Games prequel has now surpassed $300 million at the box office. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has made $145.2 million in North America.

Third place went to The Boy and the Heron ($5.1 million), Godzilla Minus One ($4.8 million), and Trolls Band Together ($4 million) completed the top five.
