The second greatest opening of 2023, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse earns $120.5M at the box office

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the domestic box office receipts for the follow-up to 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, totaled $120.5 million.

According to Comscore, this places the Sony Pictures Animation film behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie as having the second largest opening weekend of 2023. Across the Insect Stanza additionally had the third greatest opening few days of any Bug Man film.

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) embark on an epic journey across the multiverse in Across the Spider-Verse. Along the way, they come into contact with a brand-new group of Spider-People known as the Spider Society, led by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), as they struggle to deal with a new threat.

“Miles is in a place where he just wants to impress her,” Moore told EW. “He will jump through a portal across dimensions to be with her. And quite frankly, I don’t know if I know anybody I’m willing to jump through a portal for.”

“I’ll tell you something: I don’t!” Steinfeld added with a laugh.

Across the Spider-Verse made $88.1 million more overseas, making it Sony Pictures’ biggest animated opening ever with $208.5 million for the worldwide weekend.

With $40.6 million, Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid remained in second place at the domestic box office, bringing its two-week total to $186.2 million ($326.7 million worldwide).

The Boogeyman, based on a Stephen King short story from 1973, opened with $12.3 million, or $20 million worldwide. The film stars Chris Messina as the father of two daughters who is dealing with the recent death of their mother. In addition, the family must deal with a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and profits from its victims’ suffering.

Vol. 2 of Guardians of the Galaxy In its fifth week of release, 3 earned $10.2 million, placing it fourth at the weekend box office. This brought its domestic total to $322.7 million and its worldwide total to $780.1 million.

The tenth film in the Fast and the Furious series, Fast X, rounded out the top five with a profit of $9.2 million in its third week of release, earning $128.5 million domestically and $603.3 million worldwide.
