Monty Williams signs a record 6-year, $78.5 million coaching contract with Pistons

According to sources, Coach Monty Williams has agreed to a $78.5 million contract for six years with the Detroit Pistons. It is the NBA’s largest coaching contract ever.

After working with the Phoenix Suns for four seasons, Williams, 51, was let go earlier in May. The move was made after the Suns were defeated in the Western Conference semifinals by the Denver Nuggets.

Williams, who was named NBA Mentor of the Year in May 2022, was 194-115 (.628) in the ordinary season and 27-19 in the end of the season games for Phoenix. In 2021 and 2022, the Suns won a franchise-record 64 games and made it to the NBA Finals in 2021.

Williams will take over for Dwane Casey in Detroit. Casey quit as coach of the Pistons in April to take a job in the front office.

Casey had trained Detroit starting around 2018, however in five seasons the group went 121-263 (.315). During his tenure, Detroit made the playoffs once, in 2018-19, but lost in the first round.

The Pistons have failed to reach.500 in seven consecutive seasons. 2015–16 was their most recent winning season.

Jalen Duren and Jaden Ivey, ranked No. 5 and No. 13, separately, in the 2022 NBA draft, gave desire to the future with their play last season for Detroit.
