Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI wants to build its own supercomputer.
The tech billionaire hopes to launch a project running the next version of xAI’s chatbot Grok as early as next year, The Information reported on Saturday (May 26).
Musk says xAI will need up to 100,000 specialized semiconductors to train and run the next version of his Grok, and that a “gigafactory of computing power” will be required to house these chips. publicly stated that it would be necessary.
According to information, this device will be connected to his Nvidia flagship H100 graphics processing unit (GPU), making it at least four times his size as the largest GPU cluster currently in existence and ever in operation. The report also states that xAI may collaborate with Oracle on supercomputer projects.
This news comes days after reports that xAI has secured new backing that approaches a $6 billion funding round and values the company at $18 billion.
Musk told investors that xAI can compete with companies like OpenAI, Anthropic and Google by leveraging the data, technology and business of other companies he leads, including Twitter/X, Tesla and Starlink.
xAI introduced Grok last November. This is his ChatGPT-like AI assistant with 314 billion parameters. (For comparison, his GPT-3 model in OpenAI had 175 billion parameters.)
In March, xAI announced that it would open source his Grok. Some say the move could democratize AI technology and lead to innovation in commercial applications.
Richard Gardner, his CEO at technology consultancy Modulus, said in an interview with PYMNTS that “Open source models could lead to more competition and, potentially, lower costs for businesses looking to leverage AI in their operations.” “As the underlying models become more accessible, competition might shift towards the quality of data used to train them and the expertise in applying those models to solve specific business problems.”
He added that open source AI allows for faster innovation and greater transparency than proprietary models developed by big tech companies.
“Open source supports free speech and reduces the potential for censorship by big tech,” Gardner said, even for small businesses and startups that don’t have the resources to develop a creation model from scratch. He pointed out that open source makes AI easier to use.
Other significant technological developments that Musk has announced for the upcoming months include his intentions to transform X into a superapp for payments by year’s end and Tesla’s robotaxi, which he stated in April would be unveiled in August.
