The action at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre is intensifying as the World Snooker Championship progresses to the quarterfinals.
Several of the top contenders have already lost, like as four-time champion Mark Selby, who was defeated by training partner Ben Woollaston, and reigning champion Kyren Wilson, who was defeated by Lei Peifan in the opening round.
However, there haven’t been any issues like that with returning Ronnie O’Sullivan yet. In order to go to the second round, the seven-time champion defeated Ali Carter 10–4 and then easily defeated Pang Junxu to advance to the record-extending 23rd quarterfinal. He made a joke of his recent lack of activity by racking up three hundreds in five frames.
The 49-year-old acknowledged during his sabbatical from the game that he was “scared to go near a snooker table” and that he was afraid he had misplaced his bottle, but he still chose to play at the Crucible. After a contentious Masters encounter last year, O’Sullivan called Carter a “f****** nightmare” and “not a nice person,” raising the possibility that the first-round match would turn into a resentment battle. However, it was played in a friendly manner.
The World Snooker Championship began on Saturday, April 19, and the championship match will take place over two days beginning on Sunday, May 4.
