NFL Introduces Gold Shield Patch for MVP and Player of the Year Winners

NFL players don their game jerseys with the league’s shield on the collar.

The league MVP and the player of the year will wear a gold shield patch for the first time in NFL history, according to ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg. It was the NFL Honors logo that inspired the gold patch.

The 2024 NFL Honors winners were quarterback Josh Allen of the Bills (MVP), offensive player of the year Saquon Barkley of the Eagles, defensive player of the year Patrick Surtain II of the Broncos, offensive rookie of the year Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, and defensive rookie of the year Jared Verse of the Rams.

Starting with the Eagles’ season opener against the Cowboys on Thursday, the gold shield patches will be present on all five of their jerseys for the duration of the season.

The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award recipients wear a special patch on their jerseys for the remainder of their careers, and the NFL also honors captains with a “C” patch on their uniform.
