Japan Athletics Championships 2025: Full Schedule & Live Streaming Info

The fact that spots for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo are up for grabs makes this year’s Japan Athletics Championships even more important.

The 109th Japan Athletics Championships will take place from July 4–6, and the home athletes of the 13–21 September worlds will have a chance to win everything at the National Stadium.

Only three competitors have secured spots on the Japanese team for the world championships: Miura Ryuji in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase; Takemura Rachid, the 110-meter hurdler; and Kitaguchi Haruka, the Olympic and world champion in the women’s javelin throw.

If anyone else wants the once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete at athletics’ premier event in their home nation, they will have to go through the nationals this week. He or she must place in the top three at the three-day meet and meet the qualifying standards in order to be qualified.

Most people will be watching the men’s 100m, especially two-time Olympian Abdul Hakim Sani Brown, as Kitaguchi withdrew due to discomfort in his right elbow and Takemura saved himself for the worlds after finishing fourth at Diamond League Paris.

The only competitor in the field with a qualifying time under ten is Sani Brown, who has advanced to the final of the last two world championships but has not yet run above 10.31 this year.

Yanagita Hiroki, the two-time Asian champion who won the Golden Grand Prix in May with a Japanese lead of 10.06 over Christian Coleman, is anticipated to be his main danger.

Yamagata Ryota, who holds the national record of 9.95 and helped his team win silver in the 4×100-meter event in Rio 2016, could add some interest after running a 10.12 last month and seemed to be seeking retribution.

Keep a look out for Flores Arie, a half-Peruvian who recently became eligible to compete after obtaining Japanese citizenship.

The 21-year-old broke the Japanese women’s 400-meter record in May with a time of 51.71. She hadn’t been naturalized yet, so it wasn’t a new record, but it was the fastest time in 17 years.
