Re-ranking the 16 remaining

Michella Chester re-ranked the 16 remaining teams before the regionals. Before regional competition begins on Thursday, here are her top five:

1. Nebraska (No. 1 seed)
This one appears self-evident. As the only unbeaten team in DI, the Cornhuskers are the team to defeat.

2. Kentucky (No. 1 seed)
Even though the Wildcats were the only No. 1 seed to drop a set in the first two rounds, it would be difficult to drop them any lower with just two losses this season.

3. Texas (No. 1 seed)
The Longhorns faced No. 8 Penn State in one of the most difficult second-round matches, but they managed an outstanding sweep, limiting the Nittany Lions to just nine points in the second set.

4. Pitt (#1 seed)
The Panthers swept Michigan in the second round, though maybe not as handily as they would have liked. Sets one and two were both won by two points, but with reigning AVCA Player of the Year Olivia Babcock on their side, Pitt is hard to rule out.

5. SMU (#2 seed)
The Mustangs became the first two-seed to make the re-rankings after setting an NCAA tournament record with a.618 hitting percentage in the first round. This team is currently hot as it prepares for regionals.

Bracket heading into regionals

You only have four rounds left before a national winner is chosen on December 21. Every top-ranked seed proceeded to the regional round, with the exception of No. 4 Southern Cal, which was defeated by Cal Poly in five sets.
