As the world’s top players gather in Flushing, New York, for the season’s last grand slam, the men’s and women’s singles competition for the 2025 US Open has begun.
Given that they have faced off in the previous two grand slam finals and shared them, with Sinner winning Wimbledon and Alcaraz winning the French Open, it is anticipated that the men’s division will once again come down to No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner and No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz.
Both men won in straight sets, handily handling their business in the first round. Later on Thursday, Sinner easily defeated Alexei Popyrin, while Alcaraz easily defeated Mattia Belluci in straight sets to go to the third round. Seeking his 25th grand slam title, Novak Djokovic has gotten off to a solid start as the No. 7 seed. Although he lost his opening set to Zachary Svajda of the United States in his match in the second round, he recovered and won the following three sets to go to the third round once more.
Reigning Australian Open champion and sixth seed Madison Keys lost to unheralded newcomer Renata Zarazua of Mexico in three sets on Monday, the first significant upset of the event. Keys made an incredible 89 unforced mistakes throughout the furious clash. Despite a tremendous challenge from Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, No. 3 seed Coco Gauff managed to win in three sets on Tuesday, almost causing a second major upset. Despite some difficult moments on Thursday, Gauff advanced to the third round by defeating Donna Vekic in straight sets.
