For years, one of the most persistent frustrations among Google users has been the inability to change their primary email address without opening a new account.
Whether you’re stuck with an unpleasant handle from high school or just want to rebrand, Google has traditionally treated the @gmail.com username as a permanent fixture. However, a major policy shift is currently underway.
Google has began a slow introduction of a service that allows users to change their current Google Account email address while keeping all of their data, purchases, and history.
How Change Works
According to updated support documentation, customers having @gmail.com email addresses can now replace them with a brand new @gmail.com address. Previously, changing a username meant opening a new account and manually moving data.
Importantly, this process does not remove the previous email address. Instead, the previous address is automatically changed to an alias. This provides continuity:
- You will receive emails sent to both your new and old addresses in the same inbox.
- Your stored data, such as Drive files, Google Photos, and purchase history, stays intact.
- You can sign in to Google services with either your new or old email address.
To prevent this functionality from being abused, Google implemented specific safeguards. If a user changes their email address, they will be unable to create another @gmail.com address for this account for the next 12 months. However, users can always return to their old address.
Furthermore, Google warns that altering the primary identity may cause issues with third-party services. If you use “Sign in with Google” for external sites, or if you use a Chromebook or Chrome Remote Desktop, you may need to re-authenticate or modify your settings following the changeover. Before making any changes, Google strongly advises backing up important data and reviewing app settings.
How to check for a feature
Because this service is being introduced gradually, it may not be available to all users right away. To determine whether your account is eligible:
- Go to myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer.
- Choose Personal Information from the left-hand menu.
- In the “Contact info” section, select Google Account email.
- Look for the button entitled Change your Google Account Email Address.
If the option displays, you may proceed by entering a new, available username. If the option is missing, it is most likely because the functionality has not yet been made available in your location or account type. Accounts maintained by schools, workplaces, or organizations cannot often change addresses without administrator consent.
This update offers a huge quality-of-life boost for the Google ecosystem, giving consumers more control over their digital identity without the risk of data loss.
