Today’s Doodle celebrates Moldova’s Independence Day. On this day in 1991, parliament formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which made the Republic of Moldova a sovereign state and brought an end to over 50 years of Soviet rule.
The Moldovan flag, depicted in today’s doodle, is now displayed on homes and buildings throughout the country. The blue, red, and yellow flag was introduced in 1990 and is the same colours as the Romanian flag, symbolising the cultural affinity the countries share.
Moldovans will celebrate their Independence Day with fireworks, concerts and festivals. The president will address the nation in a televised address before a spectacular military parade in the capital, Chisinau. Afterwards, families and relatives will enjoy traditional dishes such as mamaliga (a polenta made of yellow maize flour).
Happy Independence Day to the Republic of Moldova!
