The Doodle for today honors the Independence Day of Nigeria. This day in 1960 marked the country’s independence from Great Britain and its emergence as an independent republic.
The festivities kick off with a national broadcast of a presidential speech honoring 64 years of independence. Parades light up the streets with excitement and color across the nation. Schoolchildren joyfully march in local processions while wearing the green and white national colors. Similar events take place in Abuja, where marching bands and amazing aerial flyovers are featured during the civil-military parades around Eagle Square.
Along with celebrating the nation’s cultural diversity and common ancestry, many Nigerians dress in traditional attire or get together for a meal of jollof rice or suya, which is hot beef skewers. People assemble to watch fireworks light up the sky as the night comes to a close.
Nigeria, happy Independence Day!
