This Doodle honors Festa della Repubblica, or Italy Republic Day 2025! Celebrated on this public holiday, Italy’s transition from monarchy to republic represents the return of power to the people. To determine the destiny of the country, an institutional referendum was held on this day in 1946 with universal suffrage.
The Italian people desired a republic and a permanent separation from the monarchy following World War II. The next year, citizens of Rome celebrated the first-ever Republic Day after almost 12 million people voted in support of the republic.
The main celebrations, which still take place in Rome even 70 years later, include parades, concerts, and ceremonies. At the Altare della Patria, Italy’s national flag, the tricolore, is flown high in the sky. Additionally, every year the president places a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Families and friends get together for feasts, parties, and picnics. They also frequently visit parks, historical sites, the beach, and other locations.
Happy Republic Day, Italy!
