Starting July 7th, Android users will begin seeing a major update to Google’s Gemini AI assistant. In an email shared with users, Google confirmed that Gemini will soon be able to interact directly with apps like Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and system utilities—even if you’ve turned off the Gemini Apps Activity setting.
Previously, turning off this setting meant Gemini couldn’t carry out tasks like setting alarms, sending messages, or making calls via connected apps. It also prevented your conversations with Gemini from being used to train Google’s AI models. That changes with this update: you’ll now be able to ask Gemini to complete everyday tasks on your phone while keeping your privacy intact.
Understandably, some users were initially confused by the wording in Google’s message, leading to concerns about privacy and data access. But Google has since clarified that this update doesn’t mean Gemini gets unlimited access to your phone or private information. You can still disable Gemini’s app permissions at any time through your device settings.
According to a statement from Google, this update gives users more flexibility. “They can now use Gemini to complete daily tasks on their mobile devices like send messages, initiate phone calls, and set timers while Gemini Apps Activity is turned off,” the company explained. Importantly, with this setting off, your Gemini chats won’t be reviewed or used to improve Google’s AI.
While Gemini won’t save conversations to your activity log when Apps Activity is turned off, Google notes that it may still temporarily store interactions for up to 72 hours for safety and security reasons.
This change comes as Google prepares to roll out Gemini as a full replacement for Google Assistant later this year, giving Android users a more capable and privacy-conscious way to manage their phones.
