How conference titles factor in the College Football Playoff

Regardless of where they place in the committee’s top 25 (and even if they’re not in the top 25), the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP selection committee will automatically make the 12-team CFP field.

It’s important to remember that an automatic bid isn’t connected to a particular conference; rather, these positions are determined by the conference winners’ rankings in the CFP selection committee. To put it another way, winning a conference championship game does not guarantee a spot in the CFP. Where these teams rank in the rankings matters.
