The San Diego State Aztecs have had a busy two weeks after suffering their first defeat on September 6 after being thrashed 36–13 against Washington State. They have two weeks to be ready for the California Golden Bears, who will try to win 4-0 when they play at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CBS Sports Network will broadcast the match.
In this series, which Cal leads 5-4, the home team has never lost. Nevertheless, the Aztecs (1-1) are 12.5 points behind and face an enormous task as they attempt to energize their support base and attract more people to Snapdragon Stadium. The Aztecs distributed 4,000 free tickets while touring campus and community organizations under the direction of second-year coach Sean Lewis.
“Going to be a great one,” Lewis said. “Excited about the opportunity to be back home for a Saturday evening kick in front of our home crowd against a really good opponent that’s playing really well.”
What’s at Stake
The Aztecs have another opportunity to exact revenge for a defeat from the previous season. Last year at Berkeley, Cal led 7-3 at the half but won 31-10 after scoring on its first four second-half possessions.
Cal will be visiting San Diego for the first time since the Aztecs defeated them 45–40 at Qualcomm Stadium in 2016. Qualcomm Stadium was demolished to make room for Snapdragon Stadium, which opened in 2022.
The Golden Bears were still in the Pac-12 in 2016. Under coach Justin Wilcox, they have started 3-0 for the second consecutive season and the fifth time in nine years as they begin their second ACC season. Since going 8-5 in 2019, Cal has not ended with a winning record.
