There are several stories leading up to the tournament. NC State and Seton Hall, who are meeting for the first time since the Pirates’ thrilling victory in the 2018 NCAA tournament, have somewhat different Maui experiences. Under first-year head coach Will Wade, the Wolfpack make their Maui debut, and Shaheen Holloway, a Seton Hall alum and head coach, returns to the tournament for the first time in more than 20 years. Wade, who coached LSU in 2017, is no stranger to Maui, having defeated Clemson at McNeese State in March and coming off back-to-back Southland titles.
In the bracket, two programs with seasoned coaches who are familiar with the island will face off against USC and Boise State for the first time ever. The Trojans’ second-year coach, Eric Musselman, last led Arkansas to Maui in 2022. Boise State’s most successful coach, Leon Rice, led Gonzaga to the Maui three times, including in 2009 when the Zags won a thrilling overtime title. Against host Chaminade, whose 1982 upset of No. 1 Virginia served as the impetus for the tournament’s creation, Washington State makes its own Maui debut.
Arizona State and Texas, two former champions with strong Maui ties as their head coaches, square off in the day’s last game. As a player, Bobby Hurley was named co-MVP in 1992, and Sean Miller returns to Maui following three stints with Arizona, including a 2014 championship run.
