Men’s College World Series: Here are 47 Legendary No-Hitters and Low-Hit Games

The CWS has played 47 low-hit ball games in its 75-year history. According to the CWS record book, low-hit games are classified as no-hitters, one-hitters, and two-hitters. Let’s start by concentrating on the 30 pitchers who threw low-hit gems by themselves. Of those 47 games, 17 required multiple pitchers to finish the game.

The last time a no-hitter was thrown in the history of the Men’s College World Series was by Arkansas’s Gage Wood on June 16, 2025, during the series against Murray State. Wood gave up just one baserunner on a hit-by-pitch in the eighth inning while striking out 19 batters.

In 1950, Jim Ehrler from Texas played a crucial role in leading the Longhorns to become the first team to win back-to-back championships in MCWS history. He achieved a remarkable 7-0 no-hitter in Omaha during the inaugural MCWS held at Rosenblatt Stadium. From beginning to end, he was in exceptional form, striking out five of the six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings.

A decade later, Jim Wixson of Oklahoma State also threw a no-hitter, marking one of only eight in the history of the Cowboys’ program. This impressive performance allowed Oklahoma State to eliminate North Carolina and advance to the semifinals, with the final score of that match also being 7-0.

In the history of the College World Series, eight pitchers have completed a one-hit game. Rod Keogh from Washington State required 10 innings to achieve his, making him the only pitcher on our list to need an extra inning to accomplish this feat. His one-hitter occurred on June 19, 1950, the same day as Ehrler’s no-hitter. Two years later, Jackie Lonergan from Holy Cross managed a one-hitter, but unlike anyone else who has thrown one solo at the CWS, he suffered a 1-0 loss to Missouri.

Nineteen pitchers have recorded solo two-hitters. On June 14, 1952, Junior Wren from Penn State and Tom Cole from Western Michigan both achieved this milestone on the same day. Recently, there were consecutive seasons featuring two-hit performances; one was a combined effort by LSU’s Alex Lange and Zack Hess in 2017, while the other was Kevin Abel’s solo two-hitter in his CWS clinching shutout against Arkansas, leading Oregon State to victory in the 2018 CWS.

Here’s the complete list of individual low-hit games in the CWS:

What about the low hitters that are thrown by several pitchers? In 1964, the first two one-hitters combined occurred at the same College World Series. On June 12, Minnesota defeated the Gophers 12-0 with a one-hit victory because to the combined efforts of Frank Brosseau, Dan Howard, and Dick Mielke. Three days later, Missouri defeated the Gophers 4-1 thanks to a one-hitter from Keith Weber and Jim Nelson.

Most recently, Will Bednar and Landon Sims combined to give up just one hit in a 9-0 victory over Vanderbilt in the last game of the 2021 College World Series.

In the 1955 edition, four two-hitters were thrown in Omaha, marking the first two-hitter to occur in the CWS. Before Ken Kinnamon and Don Anderson teamed for a two-hitter for Oklahoma State on the same day (June 12) that Arizona’s Carl Thomas pitched his own, Lawrence Bossidy got things started for Colgate on June 10. On June 13, Colgate’s Sam Frankel and Lawrence Bossidy completed the group.
