Google doodle celebrates the Tanzania’s Independence Day

Tanzania’s Independence Day is celebrated in today’s Doodle! After decades of foreign domination, Tanzania (then known as Tanganyika) finally earned its independence on this day in 1961.

The United Republic of Tanzania was formally established three years later by the merger of Tanganyika and the nearby archipelago republic of Zanzibar. The country’s first president and Baba wa Taifa (Father of the Nation) was independence leader Julius Nyerere. He put forth endless effort to instill in his people the value of independence.

Tanzanians come together for large-scale celebrations like concerts, parades, and demonstrations on Independence Day. The Tanzania National Main Stadium in Dar es Salaam hosts the largest celebration. As seen in today’s artwork, the national flag, which is gold, black, green, and blue, is seen flying high in the sky for everyone to admire. While at celebrations, many people savor Tanzanian specialties like mchicha (creamed spinach), mandazi (spicy doughnuts), and ugali (cornmeal porridge).
