This doodle celebrates Uganda’s Independence Day. On this day in 1961, the Ugandan Constitutional Conference concluded and the country’s birth as a sovereign state was celebrated.
The conference began in September and took place in London. After a month of negotiations between the nascent Ugandan government and the UK, a formal transfer of power was agreed and carried out on October 9th.
Independence Day sees many people joining in celebrations across the country. The main event takes place in the capital, Kampala, where people take part in celebrations such as flag-raising ceremonies, lively rallies and traditional music concerts. A huge parade is held every year at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where the national anthem “Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty” is played and everyone sings along. Ugandans enjoy delicacies such as matooke (steamed and mashed green bananas), luwombo (slow-cooked meat with peanut sauce) and chapati (egg omelet wrapped in chapati). Meanwhile, the black, yellow and red national flag is flown high in the sky all day, as in today’s piece.
