The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, honours the conclusion of the autumn harvest in Asian culture and is commemorated in today’s yearly Doodle. Every year, the celebration falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the full moon is at its brightest in the sky.
Many places, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea, celebrate holidays. In the past, people would gather to celebrate under a moonlit sky while placing cakes and fruits as offerings on altars to thank the moon for helping to ensure successful harvests.
Everywhere the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated, friends and relatives get together, decorate spaces with colourful lanterns, and eat mouthwatering mooncakes (like the ones in today’s Doodle!). Traditions have evolved over time in each region.
