Soon, your screens will appear much more pink. “Barbie” will launch on digital on September 5 after sweeping the globe in late July and earning more than $1 billion at the box office. For $19.99, you can pre-order it on Amazon.
Margot Robbie plays the famed plastic doll in Greta Gerwig’s candy-colored fantasy as she travels outside of Barbie World and into the outside world with Ryan Gosling’s Ken. Along the way, Barbie learns that the outside world is not the progressive utopia she had always imagined it to be, and Ken learns about the concept of the “patriarchy.” The cast is completed by Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren, John Cena, and Will Ferrell.
The film, which received rave reviews, defied predictions with a $155 million domestic opening weekend, making it the highest opening weekend of 2023 and the best start for a female director. Thanks to the marketing campaign of the year and outstanding word-of-mouth to match, it became a full-fledged phenomenon. Additionally, there was buzz for “Barbenheimer,” the film’s twin release date with Christopher Nolan’s dark historical drama “Oppenheimer.”
In his review of the film, repoters writes that “Gerwig’s girl-power blockbuster offers a neon-pink form of inception all its own, planting positive examples of female potential for future generations. Meanwhile, by showing a sense of humor about the brand’s past stumbles, it gives us permission to challenge what Barbie represents — not at all what you’d expect from a feature-length toy commercial.”
