Ronnie O’Sullivan defeated Ali Carter 10–4 to go to the second round of the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield, making a mockery of his previous lack of activity by scoring three hundreds in five frames.
The seven-time champion, who hasn’t competed on the professional circuit since losing badly in the Championship League in January and broke his cue in anger after that loss, looked nearly at his best in the opening round as he easily set up a matchup with Pang Junxu, who defeated Zhang Anda, a Chinese compatriot, 10–7, in the round of 16.
Playing over the best of 25 frames, Pang vs. O’Sullivan starts on Saturday afternoon. The second session is scheduled for Sunday, while the final one is scheduled for Monday night. The 49-year-old acknowledged during his break from the game that he was “scared to go near a snooker table” and that he was afraid he had misplaced his bottle, but he still chose to play at the Crucible. After a contentious Masters encounter last year, O’Sullivan called Carter a “f****** nightmare” and “not a nice person,” raising the possibility that the first-round match would turn into a resentment battle. However, it was played in a good spirit.
The World Snooker Championship began on Saturday, April 19, and the championship match will take place over two days beginning on Sunday, May 4.
