After years of anticipation, WhatsApp has officially launched its native iPad app, now available for download on the Apple App Store. This release marks a significant milestone for both Meta and iPad users, who previously relied on workarounds like WhatsApp Web or third-party applications to access the messaging platform on their tablets.
In the past, Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, has not provided iPad versions of its social media applications.
Unfortunately, Instagram has never been accessible on the iPad. However, that is rumored to change soon. First, though, Meta’s long-standing disregard for the iPad comes to an end with the release of WhatsApp for iPad.
Strangely, the change isn’t even mentioned in the App Store release notes. However, the iPad build is included in WhatsApp version 25.16.81, which was just made available.
The new iPad app brings a host of features tailored specifically for the larger screen. Users can engage in audio and video calls with up to 32 participants, utilize both front and rear cameras, and share their screens during calls. The app also supports iPadOS multitasking functionalities such as Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over, allowing seamless usage alongside other apps. Additionally, it is compatible with accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, enhancing the overall user experience.
WhatsApp for iPad employs Meta’s multi-device technology, enabling users to sync their chats and media across devices without the need for their primary phone to remain connected. This ensures that messages, calls, and shared content are consistently updated across the user’s iPhone, Mac, and iPad. Importantly, all communications remain protected with end-to-end encryption, maintaining the platform’s commitment to user privacy.
The app’s interface has been optimized for the iPad’s display, featuring a two-column layout that displays chat threads on the left and active conversations on the right. This design mirrors the desktop experience, providing intuitive navigation and improved multitasking capabilities.
To set up WhatsApp on an iPad, users need to have iPadOS 15.1 or later installed. Upon downloading the app, they can link it to their existing WhatsApp account by scanning a QR code from their primary device. This process synchronizes chat history and settings, allowing for a seamless transition between devices.
The launch of the official WhatsApp iPad app addresses a long-standing demand from users and signifies Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance cross-platform accessibility. With this development, iPad users can now enjoy a fully integrated and optimized messaging experience, aligning with the functionalities available on other devices.
