USFL championship game 2022: Birmingham Stallions win title 33-30 over Philadelphia Stars

The Philadelphia Stars were up by three points in the USFL championship game with 10 minutes remaining. The Birmingham Stallions reversed the tables and won 33-30 thanks to a touchdown drive driven by backup quarterback Alex McGough and a pick six by linebacker Scooby Wright.

Due to injuries, the starting quarterbacks for both teams were lost. Due to cramps, Stallions quarterback J’Mar Chase had to leave. The Stars’ starting quarterback Case Cookus broke his fibula on a third-down play as Philadelphia clung to a 23-20 lead.

Birmingham led by 10 after two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The Stars gave a touchdown in response. In an effort to maintain possession, they chose a fourth-and-12 play. The attempt was simply unsuccessful since the pass was incomplete.

Birmingham still needed to finish the time. With just a few seconds left, coach Skip Holtz made the decision to punt when facing a fourth down in Philadelphia territory. The Stars received a first down on the 20 after the Stallions narrowly missed an opportunity to down the ball close to the goal line. However, another interception two plays later gave the Stallions the victory.

Birmingham went 11-1 for the year. With the playoffs included, the Stars finished 7-5.
