This is all the information you require regarding the 2025 U.S. Collegiate Selects squad and the Spengler Cup.
What is the Spengler Cup?
Every year, Davos, Switzerland hosts the Spengler Cup, an invitational hockey competition. One of the most famous sporting events in Europe, it was first staged in 1923 and is recognised as the world’s oldest invitational ice hockey competition. Six club or national teams from across the globe compete in the competition, which is hosted by the Swiss hockey team HC Davos.
According to its official website, the tournament was founded by Swiss physician Dr. Carl Spengler with the goal of using hockey to bring people together after World War I. It still stands for friendliness, fair play, and international understanding.
What is the team for the U.S. Collegiate Selects?
Twenty-five student athletes from NCAA DI men’s hockey teams were chosen to compete as members of the U.S. Collegiate Selects team, which is essentially a “all-star” squad that features some of the best players in DI men’s college hockey. An NCAA-selected team will compete in the Spengler Cup for the first time in the tournament’s history.
History of NCAA hockey in the Spengler Cup
College hockey players have participated in the Spengler Cup before, despite this being the first time a U.S. Collegiate Selects team has done so. Herb Brooks, who relocated to Switzerland to coach HC Davos during the 1980–81 season, faced up against the University of Minnesota in 1981. The University of North Dakota participated the next year, in 1982.
