The second-seeded Horned Frogs defeated No. 4 seed Loyola Marymount 3-2 on Sunday to earn their first NCAA women’s beach volleyball title. Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno came from behind to win the last set.
The only school to win the title besides UCLA and USC is TCU (32-5). The Bruins won two in a row in 2018–19, whereas the Trojans won the first two and the previous four.
After taking a year off to compete in the Olympics, Alvarez and Moreno came back to finish as the unbeaten duo for the fourth consecutive year. After losing to Michelle Shaffer and Anna Pelloia of LMU 18–21 in the opening game, Alvarez and Moreno came back to win the next two games 21–15 and 15–6.
The Lions (38-7) defeated UCLA, the top seed, in the semifinals and No. 5 seed USC in the quarterfinals.
With a 21-16, 21-13 sweep, TCU threes players Sofia Izuzquiza and Allanis Navas scored a point.
Ana Vergara and Anhelina Khmil, a fours pair, also easily won 21-14 and 21-19 to earn a point. This season, the pair finished 21-0.
As the Horned Frogs ended the season with 12 consecutive victories, the Olympians ended up winning the championship.
Vilhelmiina Prihti and Chloe Hooker, the LMU twos team, won 21-16, 21-17 to gain a point. Tanon Rosenthal and Giuliana Poletti Corrales, a fives pair, won both of their matches 21-16 to earn the other point.
