PGA Professional Championship Brings Big-Event Energy to PGA Golf Club

PGA Professional Championship 2025 at PGA Golf Club

When the PGA Professional Tournament was held at the PGA Golf Club in 2021, things were very different.

The COVID-19 pandemic was still having an impact on sports at the time, and that event was no exception. There were procedures in place since staff and players had to undergo testing before entering the course, and the clubhouse was restricted when there were no spectators present.

The event really got to shine during its second visit to PGA Village this past week, now that the pandemic is largely behind it.

Holly Taylor, the head professional and director of the PGA Golf Club, stated, “This week was really special for us because we got to see that it was just like being at a tour event.”

Tyler Collet, the PGA assistant golf professional at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, finished with a four-round total of 15-under 272, setting a tournament record with a 10-shot victory on April 30. Collet dominated the 2025 PGA Professional Tournament. He received exemptions to the 2025 PGA Championship, which will take place at the Quail Hollow Golf & Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, from May 15–18, along with the other top 20 finishers.

Nevertheless, Collet’s historic victory was only the culmination of the PGA Golf Club’s single largest event, which drew 312 players when play started on Sunday.

“It’s just been a lot of preparation and a lot of hard work with our staff and volunteers and the championships committee,” Taylor said. “It really ran beautifully, we couldn’t have been any happier.”

The Wanamaker golf course is renovated

The Wanamaker golf course’s renovation started in May of last year, marking the official start of preparations. The greens, their surroundings, and bunkers were renovated under the direction of Chris Sykes, the Club’s director of golf course maintenance. On November 1st, last year, the course reopened.

Weekly meetings with the PGA of America were then arranged to help with course setup, logistics, and coordination with the Golf Channel, which broadcast all four rounds.

This year, PGA Village will host two more important events. In October, the Club will host the PGA Senior Professional Championships for the the 16th time. The Assistant PGA Professional Championship takes place in November after that.

“So the exciting part for us is the golf course, particularly the Wanamaker coming off the renovation, and just getting it in better shape,” Taylor said. “It’s hard with the new greens because they have a tendency to be hard over the summer. There are agronomic practices we can work on for maturing those greens a bit and getting them a little bit softer going into the fall.”
