What the 12-team bracket could look like

The top five conference winners will be automatically selected for the 12-team College Football Playoff field. The 12-team bracket will be completed by the final seven teams with the highest rankings.

Regardless of whether they win their conference championship or not, the teams placed 1-4 in the CFP rankings would receive the top four seeds and a first-round bye, a change from the previous season. According to the initial CFP rankings, Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, and Alabama would be the top four seeds.

In the first round, teams ranked 5–12 will compete against one another, with the higher-seeded teams hosting at campus locations. Virginia is the top-ranked ACC team at No. 14 in the CFP rankings. Virginia would receive an automatic berth and the No. 11 seed in the CFP if it were to win the ACC championship. The Tigers are predicted as the No. 12 seed in the tournament because there are no Group of 5 teams in the original top-25, but Memphis would be the top-ranked G5 club at this time. In this scenario, No. 11 Texas and No. 12 Oklahoma would be the first teams eliminated from the playoffs.

Conferences with the highest number of CFP top-25 teams

The Big Ten has seven teams in the top 25, while the SEC has nine, more than any other league. The top-25 is broken down by conference.
