Disney+ will begin streaming Mufasa: The Lion King exclusively on March 26 if you were unable to see it in theaters over the holidays. The streaming date for the movie, which made an incredible $709 million at the box office worldwide, was initially disclosed by People magazine.
Directed by Barry Jenkins, known for Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, Mufasa: The Lion King explores the origins of the iconic Pride Lands ruler. The story follows a young Mufasa, a lost cub who forms an unexpected bond with Taka, setting off on an adventure that ultimately tests their relationship.
Mufasa, which also serves as the prequel to Disney’s 2019 photorealistic remake of The Lion King, builds on the well-loved story with a cast of famous voices. Among the well-known figures are Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Donald Glover, Mads Mikkelsen, Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Aaron Pierre, Donald Harrison Jr., and Blue Ivy Carter.
This film features new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, in contrast to the original films, which included music by Tim Rice and Elton John. Milele, We Go Together, Tell Me It’s You, Brother Betrayed, I Always Wanted a Brother, and Bye Bye are some of the songs in the soundtrack.
Peter Debruge of Variety praised the movie as a “impressive, emotionally satisfying addition to the Disney legacy,” reflecting the good reviews it has received.
After previous reimaginings such as The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan & Wendy, and Aladdin, Mufasa: The Lion King now joins Disney’s expanding portfolio of live-action adaptations.
