Lionsgate is preparing a busy fall of 2025, as it currently has two blockbuster titles scheduled for that period.
The company said Tuesday that Michael, filmmaker Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biography, will now be released in theaters nationwide on October 3, 2025. The feature’s original release date of April 18, 2025 has been pushed back six months.
Jaafar Jackson, the late pop superstar’s nephew, plays the main role, while the cast also includes Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo. Fuqua directs from a script written by John Logan for the project, which is produced by Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain.
Lionsgate has also scheduled its comedy Good Fortune for a wide theater release on October 17, 2025. Aziz Ansari, the film’s writer and director, starring alongside Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, and Keanu Reeves. Ansari, Anthony Katagas, and Alan Yang work as producers.
Good Fortune follows a well-intentioned but slightly ignorant angel (Reeves) who intervenes in the lives of a dissatisfied gig worker (Ansari) and a successful venture capitalist (Rogen).
During a San Diego Comic-Con event in July, Fuqua discussed Michael’s development, stating that he was in the midst of editing the film.
“Why I wanted to make it is, Michael,” the filmmaker said. “Michael was a big part of my life growing up, big influence on my career, an incredible artist — but he was a human being, and we’re exploring that. I’m very excited about it.”
Michael footage was shown at CinemaCon in April, and King indicated that the film will have 30 songs and a long runtime in order to tell Jackson’s tale properly.
