The tournament is preceded by a number of stories Meeting for the first time since the Pirates’ high-scoring NCAA tournament victory in 2018, Seton Hall and NC State offer drastically different Maui experiences. The Wolfpack make their Maui debut under first-year head coach Will Wade, and Seton Hall alum and head coach Shaheen Holloway returns to the competition for the first time in more than 20 years. Having coached LSU there in 2017, Wade is no stranger to Maui and comes off back-to-back Southland titles and a March upset of Clemson at McNeese State.
In the bracket, two programs with seasoned coaches who are familiar with the island will face off in their first-ever meeting: USC and Boise State. Currently in his second season with the Trojans, Eric Musselman previously led Arkansas in Maui in 2022. The most successful coach in Boise State history, Leon Rice, accompanied Gonzaga on three visits to the Maui, including the Zags’ thrilling overtime victory in 2009. Against host Chaminade, whose 1982 upset of No. 1 Virginia served as the impetus for the tournament’s creation, Washington State makes its own Maui debut.
Arizona State and Texas, two former champions with head coaches with strong links to Maui, square off in the day’s last game. Sean Miller returns to Maui following three seasons with Arizona, including a championship run in 2014, while Bobby Hurley was named co-MVP in 1992.
