Kenya Independence Day: Google doodle celebrates Jamhuri Day in Swahili

Kenya Independence Day, or Jamhuri Day in Swahili, is celebrated in today’s Doodle. Two significant dates in Kenyan history are honored on this holiday. Kenya became a republic on this date in 1963, exactly one year after it gained independence from Great Britain.

Public Day festivities start off in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. At Nyayo Stadium, where the president gives an annual address to the nation, public figures, officers, and officials gather. The national anthem and other well-known songs are played by the Kenya Marching Band. Later, helicopters and jets fly overhead.

The Kenyan flag that is featured in today’s Doodle flies high across the nation. Traditional clothing known as kikois and kitenges also features the national colors of green, red, black, and white, which are also a sign of pride. The bright, woven fabric is used as tablecloths or wrapped around the body for celebrations. Freedom Day, festivities are set apart with food, music, moving, and a Public Procession spilled across nearby Channels.

Kenya, happy National Day!
