In the fast-evolving world of industrial operations, heavy-lifting and crane logistics have long been plagued by inefficiencies in site evaluation and lift planning. For Sarus Inc., a Boulder-based startup, the mission was clear: automate and simplify the laborious lift-plan reporting process through cutting-edge technology. Their goal was ambitious, but with the right partnership, Sarus was able to turn vision into reality.
LabFox, a product development studio co-founded by data scientist and entrepreneur Vamsi Kunaparaju, became a pivotal partner in Sarus’s journey to bring their innovative software to market. LabFox’s involvement enabled Sarus to expedite development, secure critical funding, and ultimately transform the way industrial lift planning is executed.
“Sarus approached us with a brilliant concept, but they needed a development partner who could translate that idea into a fully operational product,” says Kunaparaju.
“Our job at LabFox was not just to write code, but to deeply understand their industry, refine their technical requirements, and deliver an MVP that could impress both investors and potential clients.”
The project presented a unique challenge. Sarus was entering a space dominated by manual processes and outdated tools. Their software needed to integrate laser-distance meters with intelligent algorithms to automate site evaluations and crane selections—a task easier envisioned than executed.
“The heavy-lifting industry has relied on manual lift plans for years. The challenge was to create a solution that didn’t just digitize the existing process but revolutionized it,” Kunaparaju explains.
“We had to build something that was intuitive, scalable, and powerful enough to handle large datasets and real-time evaluations.”
LabFox took charge of the project, with Kunaparaju serving as the primary liaison between Sarus and the development team. Overseeing a multidisciplinary team of designers, developers, and product managers, LabFox brought the MVP to life within tight deadlines, allowing Sarus to present it at critical customer demos and investor meetings.
“The timeline was aggressive, but we leaned on agile development principles to keep things moving. We brought in additional UI/UX designers and developers as needed to ensure no aspect of the project lagged behind,” Kunaparaju recalls.
“One of the toughest hurdles was integrating geo-location features to enhance site assessments, but we knew that functionality was essential for Sarus to stand out.”
The results spoke for themselves. Following the successful launch of the MVP, Sarus secured over half a million dollars in funding, paving the way for further development and market expansion. The software’s success also led to pilot projects with initial customers, proving the viability of Sarus’s concept.
Kunaparaju reflects on the broader impact of the collaboration.
“For us at LabFox, this project wasn’t just about developing software. It was about contributing to something transformative in an industry that was overdue for innovation. Sarus’s success became a case study for how startups can leverage technology to disrupt traditional industries.”
LabFox’s work with Sarus has since opened doors to other partnerships with early-stage startups seeking to bring new technologies to market.
“This project solidified our reputation as a go-to product development partner for companies looking to build industry-specific solutions. It also underscored the importance of being adaptable and customer-focused in the tech development space,” Kunaparaju adds.
As Sarus continues to grow, their partnership with LabFox serves as a reminder of the value of collaboration and technical excellence in bringing ambitious ideas to life.
“It’s rare to find startups willing to take on such complex challenges, but when they do, having the right partners makes all the difference,” Kunaparaju concludes.
