IIHF World Hockey Championship 2025: Canada Defeats Finland in First Round

Canada opened the 2025 IIHF World Hockey Championship with a 5-0 victory. Canada won with their newly formed top line, hoping to repeat as gold medalists.

Laura Stacey, Jennifer Gardiner, and Marie-Philip Poulin, their top line from the PWHL’s Montreal Victoire, made the transition from the professional to the international stage without missing a beat. Jennifer Gardiner scored her first goal for Canada’s IIHF senior national team just over six minutes into the match. Marie-Philip Poulin and Ella Shelton provided assist on the goal.

Poulin scored on a feed from beyond the net from Jennifer Gardiner after Ella Shelton scored for Canada.

Gardiner scored her second goal and third point of the evening with a flukey shot from the goal line just 18 seconds into the second period.

In the second half, Canada’s offensive output decreased, but late in the game, Emma Maltais added her first goal of the tournament to put the score at 5-0.

Campbell’s Canadian debut results in a shutout.

Despite being a third-string goalie, Kristen Campbell has won gold at the Olympics and World Championship. For Campbell, who made her debut for the Canadian senior national team at an IIHF event, a medal at the 2025 World Championships would mean a little more. For the shutout, Campbell not only made an appearance but also stopped all 24 shots she faced. In the game, Eve Gascon supported her.

Ann-Renee Desbiens, the current starter for Team Canada, was watching Canada from the stands. The Montreal Victoire formally removed her from long-term injured reserve.

Finland, the bronze medal-winning squad from the previous year, is already 0-2 and has been outscored 12-1 to start the 2025 competition. Canada will play Switzerland tomorrow.
