Downton Abbey The Grand Finale streaming

After 15 years, Downton Abbey may have closed, but the legacy lives on.

“Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” the final installment in the British TV phenomenon-turned-cozy film trilogy, completes the extensive story of the Crawley family, which was covered over six seasons of the ITV and PBS series “Downton Abbey.”

When the show, which was created by Julian Fellowes (HBO’s “The Gilded Age”), came to the United States in early 2011, it became an instant hit. It received 15 Emmy awards, 69 nominations, and three Screen Actors Guild trophies for best ensemble. Maggie Smith, who passed away, played the powerful Dowager Countess Violet Crawley.

“The family faces financial trouble, the entire household grapples with the threat of social disgrace,” according to the film’s synopsis, as Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) struggles with the fallout from divorce in 1930s high society.

“The Crawleys must embrace change as the staff prepares for a new chapter with the next generation leading Downton Abbey into the future,” it added.

In the production notes, Fellowes stated that he wanted to “make a point” with the third movie, stating that Violet’s passing “may be the end of a family member, but it wasn’t the end of the family.” He was also interested in demonstrating that “families like the Crawleys who survived into the modern world, had to redefine themselves, get used to the new way of things and see if they could live with it.”

“Some rather spectacularly could not, but I would like to feel that the Crawleys are one of the surviving families who have come to terms with the modern world,” said the writer.
