Google Pixel 10 Launch Event: What to Expect on August 20

Google Pixel 10 series lineup and launch preview

After primarily focusing on how Gemini will revolutionize everything from web searches to filmmaking during Google I/O 2025, Google is now set to unveil new hardware. The upcoming Made by Google event is scheduled for August 20, and the company has already revealed the design of at least one of its new Pixel 10 smartphones.

As in previous years, Google isn’t the sole source of information regarding its new phones and wearables. Almost all the new hardware expected to be announced has leaked in various forms prior to the event. With that context and after reviewing the leaks, here’s what Google is anticipated to showcase at the Pixel 10 launch event in New York City on August 20.

Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10 Pro Fold

The invitation from Google for the event indicates that the company will present “the latest on our Pixel phones, watches, buds, and more,” which essentially confirms that a range of products similar to those launched in 2024 will be introduced. This includes the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Google’s hint about the Pixel 10 has validated what leaked images have already suggested: the company is sticking with the new design language established by the Pixel 9. The pill-shaped camera bump and flat front display will remain on the Pixel 10, with the real innovations occurring in the finer details, such as how the flat edges of the Pixel 10 connect with the back of the phone.

The subtle modifications will seemingly also encompass the thickness of the Pixel 10s. Although the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10 Pro Fold will feature OLED screens of the same size as their Pixel 9 predecessors, they will be encased in thicker and heavier bodies, as reported by Android Headlines. Additionally, Google’s upcoming Pixels are expected to be available in new color options. The Pixel 10 will be offered in “Frost” (a royal blue), “Lemongrass” (a yellow), “Indigo” (a light purple), and “Obsidian” (a dark gray), while the Pixel 10 Pro / Pro XL will be available in Obsidian, “Porcelain” (off-white), “Moonstone” (a bluish gray), and “Jade” (a light green). There is less information available about the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, but recent leaks indicate it will also come in Moonstone and Jade.

The most noticeable external update on the Pixel 10 will be the introduction of a new telephoto camera. This new telephoto camera is an 11-megapixel 5x telephoto, according to Android Authority, similar to the one found on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Meanwhile, the Pixel 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL are anticipated to include a 50-megapixel wide camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 48-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 48-megapixel selfie camera. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold may have a different camera setup, featuring a similar main camera but with 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto cameras, along with 11-megapixel selfie cameras.

Internally, Google is preparing for future performance improvements with a new Tensor G5 chip. It is expected to be significantly more power-efficient due to the company’s transition to a 3nm design manufactured by TSMC. Reports indicate that while the chip may not differ greatly in terms of raw power, the Tensor G5 is likely engineered to excel in utilizing local AI capabilities.

Pixel Watch 4

The third time was the charm for the Pixel Watch 3, so Google’s major goal with the Pixel Watch 4 is to avoid wasting the great foundation it has already established. So far, leaks for the company’s new smartwatches have been limited, but renders of the Pixel Watch 4 obtained by 91mobiles indicate that Google has some modifications in the works.

Specifically, the new Pixel Watch appears to be slightly thicker and will have lower bezels, similar to the company’s smartphones. The Pixel Watch 4 will be available in the same 41mm and 45mm sizes as before, but in additional colors, including a Moonstone option to match the Pixel 10, and with a brighter display.

The thicker frame will also accommodate a larger battery and a new wireless charging system for the smartwatch, as reported by Android Headlines. Instead of charging via a puck with pogo pins like the Pixel Watch 3, the Pixel Watch 4 will utilize a wireless charging stand that may charge it even more quickly.

Additionally, Google has already shared insights into the evolution of Wear OS. The upcoming Wear OS 6 update is set to launch on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and is expected to be available on the Pixel Watch 4 at its release. This update features built-in access to Gemini, among other enhancements. Considering that Google also oversees the Fitbit Premium subscription, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Pixel Watch 4 includes some unique fitness tracking capabilities as well.

Pixel Buds 2a

Last year, Google introduced the Pixel Buds Pro 2, and it usually doesn’t refresh its premium earbuds annually. Therefore, according to Tom’s Guide, Google might pair the Pixel 10 with the Pixel Buds Pro 2 in a new color, while reserving new hardware announcements for a sequel to the Pixel Buds A-series, named the Pixel Buds 2a.

In contrast to the company’s high-end wireless earbuds, the A-series Pixel Buds have traditionally compromised on features like active noise cancellation to maintain a lower price point. There is limited information on the direction Google will take with the Pixel Buds 2a, but you can anticipate that the new earbuds will be available in some of the fresh colors being launched with the Pixel 10.

Pixelsnap

The Qi2 wireless charging standard is open for all phone manufacturers to adopt, yet it hasn’t seen widespread implementation among Android phone makers. Qi2 employs magnets to enhance charging speeds, similar to Apple’s MagSafe, and the Pixel 10 could signify Google’s embrace of Qi2 through a new feature called “Pixelsnap.”

According to Android Authority, the Pixel 10 will have the magnets required to enable Qi2, as well as a variety of Pixelsnap attachments. The Wireless Power Consortium has stated that their quicker Qi2 25W charging will be available on “major Android phones.” It would make sense to add Google’s Pixel 10s.

Gemini and other unique software features

Gemini is Google’s current favorite, and the corporation is promoting the AI helper wherever it makes sense. The last few Pixel Drops, Google’s regular Pixel-focused software updates, have mostly included Gemini features. It makes sense for Google to incorporate a few more software exclusives with the Pixel 10.

Google will host the Pixel 10 launch event on August 20 at 1PM ET / 10AM ET. The firm has invited the press to come in person, and Engadget will cover everything Google unveils.
