The yearly Doodle for today celebrates the Republic Day of Turkey! The Grand National Assembly formally proclaimed Turkey a republic on this day in 1923, and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the nation’s independence struggle, was chosen to serve as its first president.
In honor of Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, state representatives and citizens visit Anıtkabir in Ankara on Republic Day to place wreaths on his mausoleum. In addition, people congregate in stadiums and streets to celebrate, and they typically take part in evening celebratory walks.
Similar to today’s artwork, the red-and-white Turkish flag is visible soaring high in the sky throughout the entire nation. At night, the celebrations are illuminated by a breathtaking firework display.
Happy Republic Day, Türkiye!
