Google Doodle Celebrates the National Liberation Day of Korea

Today’s doodle celebrates Korean Liberation Day, also known as Gwangbokjeol 광복절, which means “restoring the light.” The holiday commemorates the day Korea gained its freedom after 35 years of foreign rule.

On this day in 1945, Japan announced its unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers, meaning Korea was officially restored to its former independent state. Just three years later, the first South Korean government (officially called the Republic of Korea) was established.

On Liberation Day, Koreans take part in celebrations such as parades, performances, and various cultural events. A minute’s silence is observed in memory of patriotic martyrs, and people raise theTaegukgi, which is prominently displayed and flown at ceremonies across the country. The white, red and blue flag is surrounded by four black stripes, which represent sky, earth, water and fire.
