Today’s doodle celebrates Estonia’s Independence Day. On this day in 1918, the Estonian Relief Committee formally declared the country’s independence.
Every year, Estonians celebrate with a flag-raising ceremony at the Pik Hermann Tower in the capital Tallinn. Crowds gather to watch the blue, black and white flag depicted in today’s piece rise into the sky. Afterwards, a parade of the Wehrmacht marches through Tallinn’s Freedom Square.
The President will then host a reception and concert at the Estonian Theater and Concert Hall, where the audience will enjoy traditional dishes such as kirvoiräve (open-faced sprat fillet sandwich). Estonians pay tribute to those who helped achieve freedom and think about the future of the country.
Happy Independence Day, Estonia!
