Today’s annual Doodle honours Armenia’s Independence Day! The Armenian National Assembly held a vote on independence from the Soviet Union on this day in 1991. The majority of the country’s voters chose freedom in the election.
Levon Ter-Petrosyan was elected as the first president of Armenia a month later. At the beginning of his reign, he had to deal with a number of challenges, including the introduction of democratic political systems. Following the collapse of the USSR, the Supreme Council of Armenia declared complete sovereignty in December, putting an end to over 70 years of Soviet control and realising the nation’s long-held aspirations.
Armenians participate in a variety of public events on Independence Day, such as parades, concerts, and firework shows. At Republic Square in the capital city of Yerevan, the major event takes place. Many people appreciate local specialties including dzhash (vegetable stew), khorovats (grilled pork skewers), and harissa (meat and wheat porridge).
