Sedad Hakki Eldem, a Turkish architect who helped repair various buildings to retain their historical authenticity and was a major pioneer of the modern architecture movement, is 115 today. This Doodle honours Eldem.
Eldem’s love in architecture, design, and the arts began at an early age. After graduation from the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts in 1928, he took use of a governmental scholarship to travel to Europe. His design of the Turkish Pavilion, which served as a showcase for modern Turkish architecture at the 1931 Budapest International Fair, was well received by attendees.
Eldem rose to popularity in the architectural community during the ensuing few decades. In addition to publishing architectural research, he oversaw more than 20 major building projects, including the Topkapi Palace UNESCO World Heritage Site. His unique style, which combined elements of the old and the modern, brought him great recognition. His modern creations have an authentic, historical flavour because to his acute eye and knowledge in Ottoman styles.
In addition, he was a highly regarded writer and educator who had a significant impact on the development and upkeep of Turkey’s national architectural style.
