Google doodle celebrates Great Union Day in Romania

Romania Great Union Day celebration

Romania marked Great Union Day (Ziua Marii Uniri) today, honoring one of the most defining moments in the country’s history — the unification of 1918. The national holiday recognizes the historic vote by the National Assembly of Alba Iulia, which led to Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina joining the Kingdom of Romania and forming the modern Romanian state.

Across the country, cities and towns held military parades, live performances, and cultural events to commemorate the landmark anniversary. Alba Iulia, the historic site of the unification agreement, once again became the symbolic heart of the celebration, attracting thousands of visitors, officials, and families.

Romania’s tricolor flag — red, yellow, and blue — could be seen lining streets, waving from balconies, and carried proudly during processions. The colors, echoed in today’s Google Doodle illustration, represent sacrifice, justice, and loyalty — values that many Romanians say remain just as meaningful today as they were over a century ago.

Great Union Day is not only a moment of remembrance but also a celebration of national identity, culture, and resilience. The day continues to hold deep emotional significance for Romanians at home and abroad, serving as a reminder of unity and shared heritage.
